It's a Brand New View...

Brand New View started as an idea about eight months ago. I had recently graduated with a marketing degree and had every intention to head into that industry. In fact, I did for one month; a marketing research job which turned out being a lot more calling and a lot less research --- I should back up just a bit…

I’m 29 years old and it took me 9 years to get my undergraduate degree. After graduating from high school in 2007, I entered university not really knowing what I wanted to do, in fact I wasn’t sure if I was even ready for the whole thing but at the time, the university path was the only one I thought possible.

Over the course of 6 years I flunked out of university three times. But I kept going back because it was all I knew. After the third time I was asked to leave, it meant no university would accept me in Canada for five years with the exception of special cases. That was a serious low point for me but also a moment of realization; that final failure made me seriously rethink why I was trying to live a certain life that I wasn’t particularly motivated to live.

I decided with my options limited, community college would be the route to go. I figured a more ‘hands on’ approach to education would benefit my personality. It turned out to be an incredible experience, one that led to being part of the first Enactus team at the Nova Scotia Community College and countless friendships with amazing people, many I still have today.

With a Business Diploma under my belt, I decided to tackle university again (they let me back in early) and finished in the traditional amount of time it typically takes. But I still wasn’t sure what direction my life was going or even what direction I wanted it to take. I decided since I went through all the trouble of getting the marketing degree, I might as well use it!

...and that brings us back to where the idea started. The month I spent working at the marketing research call centre was the most anxious I had ever been. It wasn’t because the work was difficult, it wasn’t because of the people I worked with --- they were great people. But it was the same feeling I had all those years during my first, second, and third go at university.

I knew I had to get out, I wanted to do something that meant more to me, something that would have an actual positive social impact. What started as an idea to create some sort of social change has turned into a podcast where my good friend Ben and I interview self-starters from many different walks of life. We hope that presenting their perspective will give listeners a different view of life, to show them that if they feel like they’re forcing a round peg into a square hole, there’s round holes out there!

Since we started the podcast, Ben and I have met some incredible people and the positivity has been contagious. We can’t wait for what 2019 has in store and look forward to sharing more stories of great people that may happen to live around the corner from you.
